The origins of the mark go back to 1849 when a young mathematician, Carl Kellner founds an institute of optics to develop to market lenses and microscopes. In 1865, the mathematician Ernst Leitz becomes one of associated with the company which it will repurchase thereafter and to which it will give his name. But the decisive turn takes place in 1905.
